Classes include reading, writing, math, science, social studies, employability skills, health, consumer education, cultural awareness, citizenship, family reading/parenting, and basic computer skills.

Classes are open-entry, open-exit and are held at convenient locations throughout the county including work sites, churches, schools, and neighborhood centers.

Computer assisted instruction is available. Online GED preparation is also available. Adult General Education incorporates areas of focus included in Florida’s Next Generation PreK-20 education strategic plan, as well as, the reading and math/science initiatives of the Department of Education.

Manatee Tech Volunteer Center

The Manatee Tech Volunteer Center offers individualized tutoring in basic math and language skills, at no cost, to students enrolled at Manatee Tech in Bradenton, FL. The students are enrolled in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages,) ABE or GED® Test Preparation. Sessions are customized to meet the needs of each student and are typically held once a week for one hour.

Admission Requirements for ABE, GED®, ESL

The following are the Admission Requirements for ABE, GED®, ESL at Manatee Technical College.

Age Requirement: Adult education programs are available to individuals that:

·      Are 16 years or older.

·      Are not enrolled or required to be enrolled in secondary school.

·      Do not have a high school diploma or its equivalent.

·      Want to learn to speak, read, and write the English language.

Placement: Placement in ABE & GED® Test Preparation classes is based on performance on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). Those students who score lower than a 9.0 grade level on the TABE are usually placed in Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses; those students with scores 9.0 and above are placed in GED® Test Preparation courses. Placement in ESOL classes is based on performance on the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS) test.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Adult Basic Education, (ABE) is designed for anyone who wishes to learn or improve basic skills. English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESL classes are available to adults 18 years old or older who are not currently enrolled in another school. Students learn English at their own pace. Courses include English language studies, civics, consumer education, cultural awareness, family reading/parenting, career planning and personal development. Orientation classes are provided for new ESL students. Students may enroll at the site of their choice. Classes are held at convenient locations throughout the county including churches, schools, and neighborhood centers.

GED® Test Preparation

GED® Test Preparation classes are designed for adults, 16 years old or older, who are not enrolled in high school and who wish to pass the GED test. A variety of instructional methods gives adults great flexibility in preparing for this high school equivalency exam.  Adults may choose from online classes or computer-lab or traditional teacher-taught classes. Our counselors will help you decide at Manatee Tech and convenient locations throughout the county. Registration is ongoing.
