Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED Prep classes are designed for adults, 16 years old or older, who wish to learn or improve basic skills.   English as a Second Language (ESOL) is also offered to students who are 18 years old or older.

Classes include reading, writing, math, science, social studies, employability skills, health, consumer education, cultural awareness, citizenship, family reading/parenting, and basic computer skills.
Classes are open-entry, open-exit and are held at convenient locations throughout the county including work sites, churches, schools, and neighborhood centers. Computer assisted instruction is available through the GED level.  Online GED preparation is also available.

Adult General Education incorporates areas of focus included in Florida’s Next Generation PreK-20 education strategic plan as well as the reading and math/science initiatives of the Department of Education.

Admission Requirements for ABE, GED, EL

Age Requirement: All students in Adult Education must be 16 years old or older and not currently enrolled in a high school.

Placement: Placement in ABE & GED classes is based on performance on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). Those students who score lower than a 9.0 grade level on the TABE are usually placed in Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses; those students with scores 9.0 and above are placed in GED preparation courses.

MTI Volunteer Center

The Volunteer Center offers individualized tutoring in basic math and language skills, at no cost, to students enrolled at Manatee Technical Institute in Bradenton, Florida. The students are enrolled in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), GED (General Equivalency Diploma), or Vocational programs. Sessions are customized to meet the needs of each student and are typically held once a week for one hour.

U.S. Citizenship

Adult Education offers a class to help those immigrants who would like to pledge allegiance to the United States and become citizens. The class will cover the naturalization process, U.S. history and its government, and will prepare students to take the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Services exam. General Education Development (GED)

GED Preparation classes are designed for adults, 16 years old or older, who are not enrolled in high school and who wish to pass the GED test. A variety of instructional methods gives adults great flexibility in preparing for this high school equivalency exam.  Adults may choose from online classes, express classes, computer-lab or traditional teacher-taught classes. Our counselors will help you decide at MTI and convenient locations throughout the county. Registration is ongoing.
