Adult Basic Education (ABE)

ABE classes help adults learn or improve basic skills and/or prepare for the GED® test. Classes include reading, writing, math, science, social studies, workplace skills, health, consumer education, family literacy and basic computer skills. Computer-assisted instruction is available.

Students must be 16 or older and not currently enrolled in high school. Registration is ongoing. Locations subject to change.

 

Adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
– Las clases de Inglés

ESOL classes are available to adults who want to learn English at their own pace. Classes include English language studies, civics, citizenship, consumer education, cultural awareness, family literacy, career planning and personal development.

Students must be 16 or older and not currently enrolled in high school. Registration is ongoing. Locations subject to change.

Las clases de ESL están disponibles para los adultos que quieren aprender inglés a su propio paso.  El curso incluye estudios del idioma inglés, educación cívica, educación del consumidor, la conciencia cultural, alfabetización familiar, la planificación de carrera y desarrollo personal.  Los estudiantes deben tener 16 años o más y no estar inscritos actualmente en la escuela secundaria. Las inscripciones están abiertas todos los días.

 

Applied Academics

The purpose of this program is to prepare students for academic, technical and personal success. It is designed for students who have tested at the equivalent of 9th grade and above but need to improve their basic skills to meet the requirements of a career and technical education program in which they are enrolled. It provides 1) Career assessment, 2) Individualized basic skills related instruction to educationally disadvantaged students (including Limited English Proficient individuals), and 3) Employability behavior instruction for job acquisition and job retention.The program is characterized by open entry/open exit, self–paced instructional modules, flexible schedules, and performance–based evaluation.

Family Literacy

A state-and federally-funded program designed to help adults and their children attain improved literacy and help parents become their child’s most important teacher. Specifically, the program serves to support and improve comprehensive family literacy through the following activities: 1) interactive literacy activities between parents and their children, 2) training for parents on how to be the primary teacher of their children and full partners in their child’s education, 3) parent literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency, and/or 4) age-appropriate supplemental education to prepare children for success in school and life experiences.

Students must be 16 or older and not currently enrolled in high school. Registration is ongoing. Only offered in select locations.

 

Florida Adult & Technical Distance Education Consortium

MTC provides online learning opportunities via FATDEC for those students seeking a GED® or becoming proficient in the English language. A pre-test must be administered and eligibility
requirements met before registration for both GED® and ESOL students in order to be placed into the course. (FATDEC requires a TABE overall score of at least 9.0 to enroll in this online course.)

Students must be 16 or older and not currently enrolled in high school. Registration is ongoing. Locations subject to change. Various pre-testing procedures and instructional accommodations may be provided.

 

GED® Test Preparation Program

GED® Preparation classes are for adults who are 16 years old or older, who are not enrolled in high school and who wish to improve their ability to pass the GED test. To give adults flexibility to prepare for this high-school equivalency exam, students may choose from two instructional methods: online or classroom. Our counselors will help you decide which option is best for you! Registration is ongoing.
